How to Choose your Wedding Colour Theme

Your wedding is a very special time for every girl. You want to make it the most beautiful and memorable day of your lifetime. So how do you choose a wedding colour scheme that captures exactly what you have always dreamt of?

Here are some things you should consider.

Where and when are you getting married?

Are you planning on a spring wedding in Australia?
A steamy tropical destination wedding in Fiji?
Perhaps a romantic snowy getaway at a lodge in England?
Or maybe you'll be enjoying your day amidst the beauty of autumn in Japan?

If you're planning a destination wedding, you'll find lots of help and advice at

Select a colour that goes with the season you're marrying in.

SPRING lends itself to lush greens, yellows, light pinks, reds and purples. Think of the flowers that start to bloom in spring and you'll find inspiration.

SUMMER will allow you to use brighter primary colours like blues, greens and bright yellows. Think of the ocean and sunshine.

AUTUMN is the time for warmer colours like pumpkin orange, crimson, deep yellow ochre and royal purple. Use the fall leaves to get some ideas.

WINTER brings to mind cooler colours such as silver, white, icy blue, lilac and taupe. Think of a winter wonderland and plan around that.

Now, create an inspiration board or sketchbook. This can be just a spiral bound book or a cork board that you pin colour samples to. Collect paint samples or swatches of fabric as you find them and start to see your preferences come to life.

Think about the type of wedding you want.

What's your style? Are you dreaming of a beautiful garden wedding in the countryside?
Use several shades of green.

A wedding in a winery amidst vintage barns? Use dark crimson and taupes.

A romantic beach wedding with the ocean as your backdrop? Blues are the way to go.

Perhaps you prefer an old farm with its retro charm and casual appeal? Various shades of browns and reds would be nice.

Be assured that whether you are opting for a candle lit intimate party by a lake or a grand church wedding with all the trimmings, you can choose a colour scheme that compliments your style perfectly.

Getting married in the registry office? Doesn't mean you have to skimp on colour. You can still add splashes of your favourite colour in your bouquet and your attire. Add these colours to your inspiration board.

Think about the blooming flowers.

How to choose bridesmaid dress colour?

Choosing the right bridesmaid's dress colour is just as important as choosing the right flower colours. You'll want to choose a colour based on their hair and skin colour. Blondes look good in blues, greens and earth tones. Those with dark hair and eyes look good in most colours except pastels.

Brunettes with medium skin tones can wear most colours but those with red hair should wear warm colours such deep browns and purples. Again, select shades you like and pin them to the inspiration board.

If you're wondering how to make everyone look good, mix it up! Don't feel you have to stick with just one dress for everyone. Select a colour and then let the girls choose their own hue of it. You want them to love what they are wearing as much as you do.

Putting it down on paper

The colour you selected need to be coordinated with the bridesmaid dress, the decorations, the cake, the wedding flowers, the wedding invitation and the table decorations and centrepieces.

Look at your inspiration board and select a colour. You can use several hues of the colour throughout the wedding for table linens, favours, and accents. Remember to use lighting that is simple and will show off your colour in the best way as well. The perfect colour will harmonize everything and bring the day together.
